An Insight into ROKA's fabrics

These past two weeks have been very busy for ROKA; first was our A/W2012 photoshoot (behind the scenes images to be released soon- keep your eyes peeled!) and now we are in Paris at the esteemed Premiere Vision fabric trade show seeking out some new fabrics for the latest ROKA collections. Since the fabric we use is so important to us, we decided to let you know exactly why we use the fabric we do to construct our garments.

Lodi in Tencel

ROKA strives to be environmentally friendly and reflect this with our fabric use; the first, tencel, is a fabric made with wood pulp from sustainable tree farms whose making process recovers or decomposes all solvents and emissions. As well as being fully biodegradable, tencel is soft, breathable lightweight and comfortable to the wearer whilst being incredibly durably and resistant to wrinkles. Perfect for our ROKA girls!

Pine hills in Bamboo & Modal

Our bamboo garments are incredibly soft and create a smooth and luxuriously comfortable fit. The environmental benefits from bamboo are staggering, as the fastest growing plant in the world, bamboo is 100% naturally grown, with no help from man, pesticides or fertilisers. It also yields ten times more produce per acre than cotton. For the wearer, bamboo has a unique thermo-control property; in heat bamboo is cool to the touch and this is maintained in the fabric, it also absorbs moisture and has good ventilation. However you can also benefit from wearing bamboo in the winter as using a bamboo garment as a base layer traps warm air next to the skin keeping you snug all day long!

Rio Dell Tank in Modal

Modal fabric is the final fabric that ROKA regularly uses, made from the wood pulp from beechwood trees, it has many benefits for the wearer. Firstly, it is cool to the touch and very absorbent so dyes easily and becomes colour fast after submersion in warm water. Modal is often compared to cotton, however modal solves cottons notorious shrinkage problem as modal is extremely resistant. Modal is also less likely to fade through friction and stays soft after repeated washes.

Next week we’ll tell you all about what we got up to and what we found in Paris!

Foodie Heaven

In our last post before we make the trip to Paris next week, we’re concentrating on the foodie aspect of the city. There are so many varieties of food on offer, from expansive markets to homespun cafes, there really is something for everyone!

Place Vendôme

Bustling baguette shop, Place Vendôme, is the perfect stop off for a crispy baguette filled with a range of delicious cheese and meats. Full of neighborhood locals, you may have to queue before elbowing your way into a seat, but it’s well worth it for a filling snack and glass of rustic wine.
Le petit Vendôme, 8 Rue Capucines, Paris 2nd

Raspail Market

Every kind of food; from fruit to poultry, cheese to truffles, this organic market has them all. Open Sundays from 9am to 2pm it’s a great place to do the weekly shop or simply marvel at the fresh flavours of the stalls.
Boulevard Raspail, between the rue de Rennes and the rue du Cherche-Midi, Paris 6th

Al Taglio

Inspired by the Roman custom to sell pizza by the weight, Al Taglio select the finest Italian ingredients and lay them over a light, crispy dough. Served in slices cut into bite-seized pieces, the best course of action is to choose a full range of toppings and sample each as a table rather than an individual. But whatever you do, make sure to try their famous pizza à la truffe
28 rue Neuve Popincourt, Paris 11th

CRU

If you’re tried of heavy meals that cause that horrible bloating feeling, then CRU is the place for you. Specialising in delicately prepared raw, healthy foods; why not enjoy the fresh flavours with a glass of wine on it’s outdoor terrace in the heart of Village Saint- Paul.
7 rue Charlemagne, Paris 4th, Metro Saint-Paul

What's a ROKA Girl to do in Paris?

This week ROKA has started to look at where the ROKA girl would go shopping in Paris, aside from the obvious ‘Triangle d’or’ whose streets are lined with the likes of Chanel and Prada, Paris has a cascade of interesting quirks to investigate.

Sweat Shop Café

The Sweat Shop Café is the spirit of a design studio collective within a cute tea room decorated in head-to-toe antiques. There are workshops on various forms of needlework as well as sewing machines available to rent by the hour or for a whole day. Then as you sew you can enjoy a slice of cake and a cup of tea, what could be more satisfying?
13 rue Lucien Sampaix, Paris 10th, Metro Jacques Bonsergent

Merci

Merci, the creation of Marie-France and Bernard Cohen on Boulevard Beaumarchais, is a perfect place to find anything one could want in Paris. Flowers, books, fashion, homewares, haberdashery, antiques, kidswear, coffee - all bathed in sunlight within the loft-style displays. Varying from vintage to brand new products, each piece is donated by designers such as Stella McCartney and Isabel Marant, and with 100 per cent of its profits donated to charity you can shop safe in the knowledge that your purchase help others as well!
111 Boulevard Beaumarchais - 3rd, Metro Saint Sébastien Froissard

Eva Pritsky’s Flea Market

Flea Market by day, bistro by night; Eva Pritsky’s boutique is the perfect place to meet friends. Enjoy a drink and a chat whilst admiring the second hand oddities on offer, from the electric blue chair you’re sitting on to the fifties kitchen table you are gathered around. Pritsky’s is a truly great place to find treasured pieces.
5, rue d'Eupatoria, Paris 20th, Metro Ménilmontant

XXO Warehouse

This is on for design lovers, XXO Warehouse is the insider’s favourite for hunting for bargain design treasures. New items arrive all the time; vintage furniture, period pieces, second-hand furniture, end-of-lines you are bound to bag a bargain or hunt out unique pieces.
78 rue de la Fraternité,
93 230 Romainville
